Echoes of Morantia – Script

Episode 1: The Curtain rises

Synopsis

In a dimly lit, half-forgotten theater, a group of retirees gathers. Each holds a script—but none understand why they are there or what role they are meant to play. This is the opening moment of Echoes of Morantia, a mythic journey through memory, identity, and transformation—told in the immersive form of VR meta-theatre.

Presiding over the unfolding drama is The Director, enigmatic and commanding, and The Child, an animated marionette representing the AI scriptwriter—naive yet visionary. They guide, provoke, and challenge the group, yet offer no easy answers.

Among the ensemble:

  • The Actress (formerly “The Elder”) is a retired performer, still fueled by theatrical flair. She reclaims her identity with authority and wonder.
  • The Scientist is skeptical and rational, constantly seeking explanations—but must confront realities logic can’t parse.
  • The Artist is expressive, witty, and occasionally irreverent, seeing the world as canvas and chaos alike.
  • The Mystic is serene, tuned into the invisible rhythms of the setting, sensing truths beyond words.
  • The Bully hides his vulnerability in jokes and jabs, resisting belonging while craving connection.
  • The Historian sees the world in fragments and footnotes, seeking coherence in memory and architecture.
  • Embrace is the quiet soul no one sees—literally. Her presence is felt but not acknowledged. She embodies longing, invisibility, and the yearning to be recognized.

As the group begins reading the script, tensions rise. They question their identities, resist their roles, and test the boundaries of the stage. The theater transforms: reality dissolves into shimmering light. The group finds themselves aboard a strange ferry crossing toward an island—a surreal vision inspired by Böcklin’s Isle of the Dead. They step onto land shaped more by memory than by stone.

On the island, the impossible occurs. The Actress discovers she can see without her glasses. Others feel stronger, lighter, ageless. The place itself seems to respond to their thoughts, emotions, and choices. Doubts emerge—are they alive, dead, dreaming?

The Director and Child reveal little. The script continues. The challenge is set.

By the end of the episode, each character begins to sense that this world—like the narrative itself—is malleable. That their choices carry weight. That the viewer (sitting invisibly in the audience chair) is not a passive observer but a catalyst. And that the story they are in… may be writing them back.

The curtain has risen. The island awaits.
